Panel from 1923 book (see title page just below)

Notes: I composed this poem mystically and spontaneously in Spanish while driving between the towns of Dolores Hildalgo and San Miguel De Allende, State of Guanajuanto, Mexico. I spoke Spanish from age 2 to 4, but “lost it” until I lived in Mexico for a brief while in the late 1980’s at age 38. First below is the original Spanish that spewed forth on the page from my subconscious. Below that is a Spanish version that maybe is more understandable. Last, finally, is my English version.

Dolores, a common girl’s name, also literally means “the pains” which some say is given to a baby who was very painful to birth or given to a child to honor the pains endured by our ancestors to bring us this far in life. Layers of meaning…that’s what makes poems fun, right?

[English version]

The gentle rain, your kiss
The comforting sun, your touch.
Everything that grows, is swollen like my eyes
Flooded with love for this land.

In the shadows created by all this new life,
I see the ancestors smiling and dancing
To the music that our hearts make.

The rooted soil, our embrace.
The endless sky, our breath.
