In our pre-agrarian past before the rise of patriarchy I don’t believe men or women suffered the complex you describe.

Now that I am 64 and single again I approach relationships as I imagine our pre-agrarian ancestors did. I am kind, generous, and brave; and will behave in a loving manner as long as that behaviour is rewarded with respect and loyalty. There are plenty of such somebodies for everybody as long as nobody pressures someone to be THE ONE.
