When I contemplated this subject I come up with these categories (which of course could combine for certain individuals):

  1. Low income men who are just getting by and who might benefit from sharing expenses with someone but would rather take their chances with running out of money than deal with the mundane irritations that any cohabitation arrangement entails.
  2. Widowers who would rather live with the ghost of their spouse than seek intimacy with someone new.
  3. Hermits who have embraced solitude and don’t suffer having only limited socialization.
  4. Men who have what it takes to support a romantic partner but just haven’t been able to find that perfect women 8–12 years younger than themselves.
  5. Self delusional fellows who think they have what it takes to support a romantic partner.
  6. Men who think all women are crazy and can’t understand what it was they ever saw in them.
  7. Men who seen lonely to you, but if you knew them would reveal a busy volunteer life filled with meaning.

I think I’m #4, but I could be wrong. If I’m right my days are numbered. I’m 65 and if I’m still single at 75, I pray I’ll be a #7.
