Yes, refinement of renewable energy technology is a good thing, but if pipe dreams about its ability to maintain the status quo keep the us from facing the reality of our coming no growth future then instead of having a gradual descent we could instead tip into a chaotic descent in which the complexity and supply chains based upon fossil fuels are no longer available to use for the development of renewables. This is a delicate balance. We will either drop quickly back to our pre-industrial prime renewable of bio-mass (firewood and feed for work animals) or instead bring forward with us some post-industrial high tech renewables. Which option plays out, I think, depends on whether or not we can wisely use what preciously high EROEI energy sources we have left.
